Beer Sheva river rehabilitation, conservation & place making, Beer Sheva

As part of the “river management” course within the MA in resource management at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, we set out to preserve, where possible, and rehabilitate natural fauna and topographical elements of the Beer Sheva river running through the city of Beer Sheva. As this river only flows seasonally, the treatment of the embankments is essential to ensure that the space is not treated as a wasteland due to the proximity to commercial parks on the outskirts of the city. Instead, the management strategy aims at treating the resource as a public open space, using natural elements that integrate with the landscape and allow year round uses of the embankments for the public. Urban design elements nurturing a favorable micro-climate year-round such as shaded cycling paths, perennial desert vegetation assembled around rocks preventing erosion, and facilities for light crafts, space making land art and urban farming initiatives will allow this space to thrive and generate added value to residents of Beer Sheva and visitors a like.
