Boatyard and visitor center, Glenarm
For the final project in the degree, the brief was to design with contextual sensibility and sensitivity, in the coastal town of Glenarm. 3 sites were offered along with site-specific programmes. I selected to pursue the design of a boatyard beside the harbour. With careful consideration of site and socio-cultural aspects of the town, coupled with socio-economic aspirations of generating a point of interest for transient visitors, the projected building offers opening to the harbour whilst blending with the existing landscape and scale of adjacent stonemill. Drawing inspiration from the material treatments displayed in the old port of Marseille by Foster and partners as well as the cultural and congress centre in Lucerne designed by Jean Nouvel, the project aspires to marvel and emphasise and reflect the inherent texture of water. Beyond the design considerations of the building, a complete safety and accessibility study and the architect's responsibilities reports) was implemented underlining the importance of designing with concrete and realistic parameters.
