Wildlife observation deck, Orval
For the final project of 1st year, we were to each select a site on which to design a point of interest linked to a particular activity related to the natural landscape. Set in the forest in Orval on the Franco-Belgian border, each student was to select a location from the 7km path taken through various different terrains.
In view of designing a bird watching centre, I chose a location in the forest with a clear view onto a large pond. Access to the structure is set through a trail through the trees and the observation area tends to blend into its wooded surroundings through the use of similar cladding. The center also offers an elevated level where visitors can watch the wildlife in the forest. An office for the manager of the centre is nestled in the upper level. Sanitary facilities are set on the trail to the centre 10m away from the main activity.
